Timeline of Events

As of today, Dec 28, 2005, Paulie continues to do well and remains in good spirits. He alternates between his C-Legs (which recently had to be refitted due to additional atrophy in in his upper leg muscles) and his wheelchair (remaining up on the C-Legs requires a large amount of energy, so he needs breaks from them). He is driving again thanks to the use of hand controls, and likes to get out and take full advantage of this freedom as much as possible. He paints, spends time with family and friends, and has made various appearances to speak to others about overcoming adversity in a continuing effort to inspire those who need it most. And for those who have been wondering...he has not boarded the Staten Island Ferry again since the crash.

·Mar 24, 2006: The City settles with Paulie for $8.9 Million to be paid out in the form of an annuity for the rest of his life. We are all releived that Paulie can now move on knowing that he will be taken care of medically and financially for the rest of his life.

-Earlier Events:
·Jun 21, 2004: Paulie goes back into the hospital today where he will remain for approximately 1 week to undergo more intense physical therapy on his new computerized C-Legs than he can receive at home.
·May 10, 2004: Today Paulie moved into his own apartment. It is wonderful to see him slowly regaining his independence and adapting to his new life as a double amputee. No matter what, he will still continue to have all of the support that can be offered from the friends and family who surround him.
·Apr 28, 2004: Today they upgraded Paulie's stubbies to full length prosthetics making him over 6 feet tall again while using them; There will be much work ahead of him in getting used to walking on them, but he is excited that he is still moving forward, and will continue to move forward :)
·Feb 08, 2004: The China Grill benefit was a huge success. Thank you so much to all of you who attended and donated. And our special thanks to China Grill for hosting the event and ESPECIALLY to all of the employees that volunteered their time (without pay) and worked ridiculously hard to make it such a wonderful evening. Be sure to tip them BIG the next time you stroll in there for a meal ;)
·Feb 04, 2004: Paulie took his first steps since the crash today! He affectionately called them his "second first steps" and was excited beyond words to be vertical once again after so very long, even if it was just temporary for the fitting of his "Stubbies" that are currently being worked on by Aramed. These will help prepare him for the challenge of walking on on his full prosthetics when they are ready.
·Jan 07, 2004: A nice 5 min piece about Paulie appeared on CBS's 'The Early Show' this morning. Click here to read the story and watch the video.
·Dec 23, 2003: Paulie and the rest of the family get to attend the Scott & Todd Live Benefit Broadcast from Blythedale Children's Hospital in Valhalla, NY and meet Scott and Todd from "The Big Show," as well as members of the bands Matchbox 20, Barenaked Ladies, and Train, plus solo artist Jason Mraz. He had a wonderful time and is grateful to everyone involved.
·Dec 16, 2003: After a 2 month long drug-induced coma, Debra Castro, the last remaining ferry victim in the hospital, becomes the 11th fatality of the crash. Our thoughts are with you and your family; may you be at peace now.
·Dec 04, 2003: Paul is temporarily released from the hospital while he awaits construction of his C-Leg prosthetic limbs. He stays at our great grandmother's house where he undergoes strenuous daily physical and occupational therapy to help him adapt to his new future. Nurses also visit daily to change his bandages and make sure no complications arise.
·Nov 27, 2003: Paul is released from the hospital for the first time since the crash on a 6 hour pass to spend Thanksgiving with his family.
·Nov 20, 2003: The 7th annual Dr. Theodore A. Atlas Foundation Dinner raises funds for SI Ferry victims and other worthy causes. The Atlas Foundation, along with the Kiwanis Club, will aide in making our family's house handicapped accessible for Paulie's return home. Our deepest gratitude goes out to them for their help.
·Nov 10, 2003: The services of The Cochran Firm are retained to represent Paulie in a future suit against the city in search of compensation for lifelong medical expenses, and handicap accessibility needs.
·Nov 04, 2003: Finally, the last of the skin grafts is performed and Paulie's legs are once again covered with skin. This will greatly decrease the excruciating pain of his daily bandage changes.
·Oct 29, 2003: Paulie undergoes another surgical procedure to have his knees removed so that his prosthetics can be fitted properly later on. He continues to get through it all with the best of spirits.
·Oct 24, 2003: Back to the OR for further cleaning of wounds and an abscess that developed.
·Oct 19, 2003: Paulie is stabilized and stepped down from the ICU to a regular room.
·Oct 17, 2003: Paulie goes into surgery again for a detailed cleaning of remaining debris in his wounds. They also re-attach the dangling middle finger of his left hand and insert 2 pins to hold it in place.
·Oct 15, 2003: The Staten Island Ferry Crashes into a pier. 10 are killed instantly and 71 are left injured, including Paulie, who is left in critical condition on a respirator after several hours of surgery. He will soon awake with no legs, a fractured pelvis, a re-attached finger, multiple other puncture wounds, over 200 staples throughout his body, and a serious amount of physical pain.
News and Updates
Jan 19, 2006- Some total @#$%&@! hacked the site last nite and deleted a lot of content. No worries, as it as been restored from backup. Guess I will have to make the site more secure some time in the future. I just can't believe someone would hack a site like this. Isn't there some hateful nazi site out there you should be hacking instead?
Jan 14, 2006 - Updated the colors of the entire site, which includes new looks for the message board and gallery as well. Also added a new category for photos of the ferry itself after the crash, with a few photos to get it started. I'll probably add more as I come across them.
Dec 28, 2005 - The site was down for the past 2 weeks due to some problems with the hosting and databases that I did not have time to address during the holiday season. The site is obviously back, but I had to install a totally new message board, as the database for the old one was totally lost. This means you will all have to re-register and begin posting all over again. I'm really sorry about that and hope you will all bring the new message board back to life! :)
